Discovering An All Natural Makeup Look
Makeup can be intimidating - we know. But it’s something we all want to be good at. Ever look at someone and think how the heck did they do that? Ever try to recreate a look and it turns out nothing like that how-to you found on Pinterest? Us too, but don’t worry, although you may feel like you're the only one in reality the majority of us have been there at some point. Whether you’re 12 or 52, we’re breaking it down, and are going to show you exactly how to achieve a flawless no makeup makeup look - in a matter of minutes.
Finding Your Perfect Shade Match
The key to achieving the natural no makeup makeup look comes down to the product you use and understanding how that works with your skin tone. The first, fundamental step is picking a foundation shade that is closest to your natural skin color. We want to enhance our natural beauty and not “cake up” with a shade that looks ghostly, or like you’ve stepped out of a tanning salon.
Let’s consider a scenario that we’ve all be in: You step into Sephora, or even your local drugstore. You walk into the makeup aisle, and instantly a wave of anxiety washes over you. 40 different shades - each one looking almost exactly the same as the one next to it. Overwhelming, right? So maybe you ask the cosmetologist for help. You hear words like undertone, hue, coverage, and even oil gland production. And even if she picks out a color for you, a month later it seems to not quite fit your shade anymore. Don’t worry - like all of our blogs, this IS a good news story. Choosing the flawless foundation shade is easier than it seems. Let’s find out how it’s done.
Understanding The Skin You’re In
The only 2 things you need to know to find your perfect match is your undertone, and depth. Undertone is the the color hue underneath your skin. There are 3 undertones - cool, warm, and neutral.
Cool undertones make skin appear pink, red, and blue.
Warm undertones make skin appear yellow, peach, and golden.
Neutral undertones are a combination on both cool and warm
So you might be thinking, um… I have no idea how to even look for that. The simplest way to find your undertone is to look at your wrists - do the veins appear purplish-blue, greenish-blue, or a mixture of both? Well, purplish- blue implies a cool undertone, greenish-blue implies a warm undertone, and a mixture of both implies a neutral undertone.
Fun fact! People with cool undertones tend to look better with silver jewelry, and people with warm undertones tend to look better in gold. If you’re neuteral, you can pull off either.
So if your undertone is cool, pick a foundation that has the same hues - pinky blue. For a warm undertone pick peachy yellow. And if you are natural, the good news is you can pretty much wear any undertone foundations, however, if you choose a cooler tone, it will bring out your cool tones, and warmer with bring out warmer. So, it’s best to pick a foundation that has neutral undertones.
The All Natural Makeup Look - Uncomplicated
The second component to selecting the right foundation shade is the depth of your skin. Unlike undertone, your skin depth can change overtime - base melanin, carotene, UV exposure, age, etc. You know your skin better than anyone, but if you’re a beginner, it’s best to stick with a foundation that has good color blend. This way, you can simply choose what depth looks closest, and then smooth to blend and match.
As a beginner, it’s best to use a gel formulated foundation as it blends in super easy (and tool free!) and gives great coverage, but not enough to cake or cover your natural pigment. Our go to product for this? Skin Perfection Plus with SPF 30. Available in 6 highly pigmented shades that match to your skin tone and depth, finding your perfect shade is about as easy and as uncomplicated as it gets.
No Makeup Makeup Simplified
So you’ve got the fundamentals down! Now, if you want to take it to the next level, the next step would be choosing a concealer. Picking the correct concealer follows the same guide as foundation. The dark circles under your eyes show what undertone you are, and in terms of depth, you’re going to want to pick a shade lighter than your foundation in order to color correct the darker tones under your eyes.
